In addition to cataract surgery and vision correction, Dr. Owczarek is trained and experienced in a full range of ophthalmic issues and procedures. However, he has first-rate colleagues who specialize in specific parts of the eye, who also practice ophthalmology at the Eye Care of Delaware, LLC and Cataract and Laser Center, LLC. Dr. Carl Park is a retinal expert, and Dr. Jurij Bilyk is gifted at ophthalmic plastic surgery. Rather than try to do it all alone, the three ophthalmologists, along with the knowledgeable optometrist Dr. Mitchell, coordinate with each other to provide a complete collection of eye care services on site. No matter what your needs are, we can help you.

The retina is the light-sensitive part of the eye and is essential for creating the image that is transferred to the brain. If the retina begins to tear away from its support tissue, it can allow essential fluids to seep underneath the retina, which can then lead to full detachment. This phenomenon has a higher risk of occurrence in nearsighted people and people with diabetes.
Symptoms include:
• Wavy vision
• Light flashes
• Floaters
• Sudden decrease in vision
• Obstructed or shadowy peripheral vision
Early diagnosis of a retinal tear is critical to prevent full detachment and can often be treated successfully. There are different methods to treat retinal detachments depending on the specifics of your condition.
Retinopathy is damage that occurs to the retina, usually stemming from a problem with the blood supply to the eye and is common among diabetics. Symptoms can include blurred vision and floating spots.
Diabetic Retinopathy can be effectively managed. Different treatment options include laser treatment, triamcinolone injection, or vitrectomy. Other methods may be appropriate for you.
Attacking the central vision, Macular Degeneration is a condition that occurs when debris begins to collect between the retina and its blood supply or when blood vessels begin to grow into the eye.
Symptoms include:
• Blurred vision
• Shadows or missing areas of vision
• Distorted vision
• Trouble distinguishing between dark colors
• Slow adjustment after seeing bright light
Laser treatment and medication can be effective in managing Macular Degeneration.
Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve. Elevated eye pressure can block fluids from circulating normally through the eye provoking the nerve damage. High blood pressure can also play a role in the effects of glaucoma. A decrease in visual field can happen gradually, but early detection and treatment can prevent further vision loss. Laser treatment, medication and surgery are effective in managing glaucoma.
Plastic Eye Lid Repair and Surgery
Technically called blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can remove excess skin, muscle and fatty tissue to repair the eyelid. Eyelids can interfere with vision if they begin to droop. They can lead to irritation if they are turning inside out (ectropion), and they can lead to infection or scarring if they begin to turn in towards the eye (entropion). Eyelid surgery addresses these conditions, and can be used to eliminate puffy bags below they eye as well.
Local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the eye so that the procedure is painless. You will not be able to wear makeup or contact lenses after the procedure and may need to take special care of your eye for some days while the skin heals.
Dry Eyes and Tear-duct Problems
Dry eyes can result in burning, scratchy and painful discomfort. It can happen when the eye does not produce enough tears, or if the tears that it does produce are absent of the lubricating components of normal tears. Reducing drying factors in the environment such as smoke and dust can help with dry eyes. Artificial tears, lubricants or medications are non-invasive treatment options that often help. For severe cases, sometimes partially blocking the drainage ducts or using customized contact lenses can be more beneficial. Schedule an appointment to discuss how best to manage your dry eyes.
Teary, watery eyes, the opposite of dry eyes, can also be problematic. If tears have not properly drained from they eye, it results in excessive amounts of tears in the eye. This can happen if the tear ducts are blocked or not functioning properly or as a symptom of some infections. Like dry eyes, teary eyes should be examined to determine its cause and appropriate treatment.
